About Us

The Eloxoph IRC Network is a small IRC network, providing free chat to talk about computers, gaming, scripting and the world.

We are using & developing our own server software named WeIRCd which you might want to look at when planning to setup an own small chat server.

The small network is currently running one single server, but looking forward to expand as soon as the server software is capable of multi server activity.

Feel free to read a bit about the history of Eloxoph or to have a look at the network staff.

History

The Eloxoph IRC Network was founded by Elmaron from Germany back in 2006, running the network using the self-developed Eloxoph IRC Server software on a Windows home server in Switzerland, provided by the owner of xineroc.net. Whilst the server ran with few issues, if a problem arose it was nearly impossible to catch the local operator.

Then Grim from Australia joined the team, now running the server on his home computer. As he was regularly online, he could be reached when there were any problems.

After some months, we discovered that home servers aren't as reliable and fast as we'd like them to be. It was again Grim who offered to organise a real server in a datacentre for us, and he finally got one, powered by aussiechat.org. The self-developed server software couldn't be run on it as the organised, professional server was powered by a BSD operating system, so Eloxoph switched to Unreal with Anope and had a new home.

After a long and good time on the aussiechat.org server the server started to have serious issues and went down. The Eloxoph network with its server had been down for several months from this point on, and was then relaunched by Elmaron again, this time powered by a self-rented server.

The new server wasn't running Unreal and Anope anymore, but a new self-developed ircd in C which also runs on unix systems. Due to the fact that the network owner rented the server himself that time, the network's main server is reliable and under the full control of the owner since then.

A nice guy with the nickname rotw created a new page design which is in place since about 2007 and has only been modified in small steps since then.

Some time in summer 2008, there have been problems with the own server software getting slow and crappy and the server was running InspIRCd for some months (you can read more on this on the news section). This was also the time when the normal chat user orgthingy was famous for being listed on the staff page for a few days.

While the network used InspIRCd, the server has been recoded nearly completely from scratch and is now reaching to new heights :-) and again being used. Work on server-to-server code had started in Winter 2008 so that there could be multiple servers on the network (this process is still not finished yet).

In march 2009, the network is now reachable through Eloxoph.com and not only Eloxoph.net, as the latter is still property of the owner of xineroc.net who seems to have disappeared again and therefore can't be asked for DNS changes and similar things (shame on you, Simon!). With the switch to Eloxoph.com, not only the main server but also the domain is owned by Elmaron, the network founder, so that any further issues in that area are pretty unlikely.

DNS resolution of Eloxoph.com is provided by own name servers, one being the Eloxoph chat server (still only one single machine as the server software doesn't support linking yet), another one provided by LongHairedHacker Xjs.

You can also obtain our server software's source code, it's released under the conditions of the GPL license.
