Wikipedia losing editors

November 27th, 2009 by Elmaron

Apparently, Wikipedia is losing editors on a great scale. I don't know the major cause for this, but I know for sure that a lot of articles got deleted just because some people think they are not notable - although that is even just a guideline and not a rule (practically it _is_ a Wikipedian law you can't avoid). That annoys a lot of editors devoting their time to write useful articles also about smaller but still interesting tools that are well-sourced, but just out of luck to cover a software that is deemed notable enough.

I have no idea if this is just the case in the computing area, but having read many tumultuous deletion discussions I suspect that there is a wider range of editors affected.

If you remember, that was also the reason to set up an IRC-specific wiki so smaller clients can still have their articles because IMHO also the still growing software is worth writing about - given you're always having and stating your references.

So, please: Notability isn't everything! Also small tools are worth writing about. If Wikipedia ever realizes this they will probably lose less editors.
