More evil than Google?
April 3rd, 2009 by Elmaron
Today a bit more of a political post, but I hope you still find it interesting:
Name Intelligence is a company providing very informative web services as AboutUs.org, a big wiki about all the websites on the web, and DomainTools.com, a powerful tool to get WHOIS information on a specific domain.
It is always interesting to find out who owns a site. Also interesting details on the history of a specific site might be cool to read, and as smaller sites are certainly not covered by Wikipedia, AboutUs is a nice place for that. And everybody is free to add information to it as a wiki is supposed to be.
To make sure AboutUs isn't too empty when users don't participate, they run an own bot to gather site contents and descriptions to automatically generate wiki entries on sites. The resulted "generated" (or shall I say copied?) contents of such a wiki entry are then released under the terms of the GFDL or a Creative Commons license.
How is this possible, as the original contents of the site might have a completely different license and are just copied into some wiki page?, you might ask. Well, there is probably no answer. — Read more...

Crashes & homepage modifications
November 22nd, 2008 by Elmaron
Instead of netsplits, we got a lot of crashes and errors and downtimes. It was still good to run the new unfinished WeIRCd 0.6 alpha on the main server as it allowed me to find a lot of errors that didn't occur to me when testing it locally. — Read more...
Working on netsplits
November 9th, 2008 by Elmaron
To give our IRC server the cool feature of netsplits, I'm working on a server-to-server feature. It is based on more or less external code files, one file per server-to-server protocol. — Read more...
